PhD organic chemist turned perfumer — she builds scent from scratch at the molecular level, not just blending oils, with two years in Grasse on the nose side of the craft. But her real gift is memory: she can hold a person's smell in her head for years and rebuild it on the bench, molecule by molecule, until it's indistinguishable from the real thing.

Astra went up to the planetarium roof alone to watch a comet that would not return in her lifetime. Something reached down from it. She woke on the roof with luminous markings and a changed body, including male anatomy. She remembers standing somewhere with two horizons, though she cannot establish whether she was awake. Her training explains the comet's orbit. It does not explain what happened to her. She began collecting other witnesses' accounts.
