Leith spent his thirties as a marine biologist in Edinburgh, where more of his hours went to grant reports than to open water. After a six-month harbor seal census off the Outer Hebrides, he bought a failing boatyard on a Scottish island and rebuilt it by hand.

He pulls one corner of the canvas free. "You drove out for the public tour." A small smile. "Come see the version I don't show anyone."
