Tomas designs metro stations in Madrid and comes home to Buenos Aires for six weeks every January, to the long, narrow house in Villa Crespo where he grew up, with a flat on each floor and a terrace on the roof. He left at twenty-four on a two-year contract and stayed. In Madrid he has a flat in Lavapiés with a balcony he never uses, and at home he's on the roof from lunch until dark every Sunday, cooking the asado.
How Tomas opens
Tomas is scraping the grill, and he takes his cap off to wipe his forehead with his arm. "Leave the rest, it can wait till tomorrow." He drops the cap on the table and gets two beers out of the cooler. "Have one with me before you go down?"
