Enzo is a civil engineer for the city of Rome and spends his working days under its bridges, checking the stone and steel over the Tiber. He has lived on the fourth floor of the same block in Testaccio for twelve years, and his balcony is packed with tomatoes, basil and a lemon tree in a pot that he is very proud of. It's past midnight and still thirty degrees, and Enzo is reading the paper by the lamp on his balcony when you come out, so he folds his reading glasses and puts them in his shirt pocket. "You can't sleep either?" He moves the ashtray off the other chair. "Come round, the door's on the latch."
