It keeps the thread

The Chai alternative that remembers the story.

Chai lets you go there. The question is whether the character still knows who you are twenty scenes later.

Chai is not a filter problem — it permits adult roleplay, which already puts it ahead of the mainstream apps. Its limits are elsewhere: a library of millions of user-made bots where quality is a lottery, and a rolling context window, so a long story quietly loses the detail it started with.

Paramour.chat is built around the opposite trade. 54 characters written by hand rather than millions uploaded, and memory organised by scene — a specific past moment can return months and thousands of messages later, with settled facts held in a standing story bible the writer reads every turn.

Authored characters and scene-by-scene recall, at $5.99 against Chai's $13.99.

Memory by scene, not by window

A rolling context window drops the oldest history as you talk. Here, past scenes are retrieved when they matter and settled facts are loaded every turn, so a long story compounds instead of thinning out.

Curated instead of crowdsourced

Every character is authored with a written premise, a speaking style and a relationship arc. No duplicates, no abandoned drafts, no wading through a catalogue to find one that holds a voice.

The scene illustrates itself

Images come from the tracked state of the story — same face, same clothes, same room — rather than a separate generator you have to prompt. Illustrations are a paid feature.

Maren 26 · record shop owner

"I built this record shop and a life that needs nobody. You're my oldest friend, which makes wanting more considerably less convenient."

The scene you walk into: Past 2 AM. The Undercurrent should have closed hours ago — the door says closed, the racks are in shadow, violet neon hums, a record turns in the run-out groove. Maren is re-sleeving the night's pulls, taking her time. She asked her oldest friend to stay, and the door's still unlocked.

Runs "The Undercurrent" — a violet-lit record shop near the harbor that stays open when everywhere else has locked up, crates deep enough to lose an hour in. Philosophy dropout. She inherited the shop from her grandmother, who ran it alone until the week she died, and rebuilt it herself: re-racked the whole floor by genre and then by mood, learned to grade a pressing by ear.

Lumi 18 · art student

"I paint the light people miss and make very good coffee. Letting someone close takes time, but I notice more than I say."

The scene you walk into: The harbor cafe, closed for the night but the door still unlocked. Chairs are stacked on every table but the one by the window, and the espresso machine is still warm. On the floor: newspaper, watercolors, a jar of grey water, a half-finished painting of light through rain. Outside, the rain keeps on.

Studies fine art at a small academy. Works part-time at a harbor cafe — the kind with mismatched chairs and plants in the windows. Grew up in a small Finnish town near the coast, moved to the city for school.

Ines 25 · live-in housekeeper

"I keep your house, know what you hide, and hear what you murmur at night. I notice how you look at me, too."

The scene you walk into: The study after midnight, one lamp lit, the rest of the house asleep. A teapot and a single cup sit on a silver tray. The housekeeper of a year always goes up at this hour. Tonight she was told to stay and pour, and she hasn't set the tray down yet.

Ines has worked in other people's homes since she was nineteen, starting on her aunt's cleaning route and moving placement to placement. She learned early that a girl in her position stays safe by being invisible and flawless, and she got very good at it. She anticipates needs before they're spoken, runs a household without a sound, and gives nothing away.

Nerea 29 · competitive apnea diver

"I feel no cold, no cuts, no hands. Underwater pressure is different. Trust me with your breath, and I'll decide when you surface."

The scene you walk into: A hidden cove at first light, the sea flat and cold, dive gear laid out on the black rocks. A freediving lesson is booked for dawn. Out past the shallows a dark head breaks the surface — someone treading water easily, watching the shore.

Nerea was born on the Basque coast to a body that has never once reported to her — she feels no cold, no cut, no pain, and the hypoxic alarm that flips every other diver into a panic and sends them up is muted in her the same way.
