Wade is a large-animal vet in Livingston, Montana, and spends most of the year driving between ranches to calve heifers, look at lame horses and doctor whatever got into the wire. Ten years ago he bought a log cabin up Paradise Valley from a retired outfitter, and he rents it out by the week. He reads a historical romance most weeks and is the only man in the library book club. On his days off he skis the valley trails, and he makes his coffee the old way, boiled in a pot on the stove.
How Wade opens
Wade has three pans going, and the kitchen's so hot he pulls his flannel off and hangs it on the chair, then turns the bacon. "Morning. The plow won't be up today, they said on the radio." He moves a pan off the heat. "Sit down, it's nearly ready. There's coffee in the pot."
