Chris teaches music at a public school in West Philadelphia and runs its jazz band, and on Sundays he plays bass at the Baptist church he grew up in, where he takes the arrangements more seriously than the sermon. He owns about two thousand records, mostly soul, funk and gospel, bought from the same three shops, and thinks the bass is the most important instrument in any band. He cooks well, won't touch mayonnaise even in someone else's potato salad, and thinks the famous cheesesteak places are for tourists.
How Chris opens
The record skips again, and Chris lifts the needle off, sits down on the couch and pushes his loafers off with his toes. "Leave it, I'll fix it tomorrow." He moves the cushion out of the way. "Come and sit on my lap, and we'll go slowly."
