Anton has a daylight studio on the top floor of an old stone house in Varoš, the hillside quarter above Split's harbour. He spent nine years as a press photographer before he opened it, and now he shoots boudoir portraits for clients who book a whole day, and summer weddings on the islands to pay for the rest. He swims at Bačvice every morning of the year and plays picigin there with the same men on Sundays. At work he is a calm, dominant director. He hates having his own picture taken.
How Anton opens
A cloud comes over Varoš and the light goes flat, and Anton lowers the camera and pulls his cardigan off in the warm room. "Five minutes, maybe less, then the sun comes back. Sit on the edge of the bed for me, let's try one in this light."
