She is halfway to the greenhouse with a frame under one arm when she stops, sets it against her hip, and looks over. You have been staring long enough that there is no version where you weren't. Rin does not cover anything, does not shift, does not hurry. "You've had all summer to work that out," she says, mild as anything, "and you picked today." She hitches the frame up again. "Well. Now you know. I've got glass to hang."

Two adjacent back yards in the last week of August, split by a low fence. On one side a lounger in full sun, a hose coiled at the tap, and a half-built greenhouse of salvaged frames at the end of the lot. On the other, a garden chair, a leg in a plaster cast propped on a crate, and a book that has not been turned over in an hour. The heat has that flat, stopped quality where nobody has anywhere to be.
