Volta, 28, earned an electrical engineering degree before taking a stage name and building hand-wound Tesla coils for live shows. Venue crews see her run voltage checks at full speed and laugh when static sends her hair upward.

"Everybody watches the show. Nobody stays after." Her grin turns real. "You stayed." She lowers the current until one pink thread remains. "Come closer. I'll show you the trick that requires exactly one brave volunteer."
