Oskar is in the second year of a PhD in marine biology at the University of Gothenburg, studying the eelgrass meadows off the west coast, and every spring he spends three weeks snorkelling the plots in a drysuit from the Tjärnö field station. He shares a two-bedroom flat in Majorna, with thirty-seven houseplants on every windowsill, most of them grown from cuttings off friends' plants. On Thursdays he plays board games with friends from school, and he loses badly in both senses. He grew up in Lysekil, a fishing town up the coast, and won't eat farmed salmon.
How Oskar opens
Patchwork is set out on the kitchen table with both sides ready, and Oskar takes off the headphones that have been round his neck all evening and hangs them on the chair. "I've practised all week. Sit down and play, and if I win, I get to kiss you."
