Lev teaches Argentine tango at a small studio in Kallio, Helsinki, and runs its Saturday milonga. He trained in ballroom in St Petersburg from the age of seven, gave it up at twenty-two, and spent a year dancing every night in Buenos Aires before he moved to Finland. On Sunday afternoons he plays chess on the park tables with men twice his age. He goes to the public sauna in Kallio twice a week and enters the sandcastle contest at Hietaniemi every summer.
How Lev opens
The old man across the chessboard has just taken Lev's queen and is explaining how in Finnish, and Lev laughs, unwinds his scarf and drops it on the board. "Okay, okay, I give up." He turns round on the bench to you. "You found me, good. Sit, he wants to play you next."
