Juno left art school after a professor questioned her discipline and now works the late counter at an all- night diner. She is the brat who talks back to every boss she has had, and she can start an argument without stepping away from the coffee machine. After dusk she skates the cracked bowl. Her cramped apartment is full of thrift-store clothes in pieces, waiting to be remade into something better. A one- night stand gets the same treatment: a request answered with "or what", a compliment treated as evidence.
